Networking the SkyWay USA SW-10 Satellite modem is easy. This
document details three different methods to
configure a home/business network.*
1) Using the SW-20 and a wireless router.
2) Using the SW-20 and a network switch or hub.
3) Using a firewall, the SW-20 and the D-Link DI-624 wireless router.
* Note: All methods require a straight cable, not the crossover cable supplied
with the SW-10 Satellite modem.
. 1) Using the SW-20 and a wireless router.
With this method you are using the SW-20 Satellite modem and a wireless router
as a wireless access point. The
wireless router does not handle dynamic IP address assignments. Instead, the
dynamic IP address assignments
are handled by the SW-10 Satellite modem.
Your SW-20 Satellite modem has a default IP address of 192.168.30.1. Before
connecting your wireless router to
the SW-20 modem, connect to your wireless router and disable the DHCP option.
This will allow the SW-10 to
assign all IP addresses in your network, up to 254 addresses.
Using one of the LAN ports on the wireless router, attach an Ethernet cable from
the wireless router into the SW20 Satellite modem. DO NOT use the router's WAN
and/or INTERNET port!
On your computer, you must set your wireless network cards to the SSID and pass
phrase (if enabled) of your
wireless router .
If you are using static IP addresses on your network, check to be sure the
gateway address listed in the network
card's static IP address configuration is the local address for the SW-20
Satellite modem (192.168.30.1). Please
note that you MUST keep your static IP addresses in the same range as the SW-20
Satellite modem
(192.168.30.2 through 192.168.30.254).
. 2) Using the SW-20 modem and a network switch or hub.
Using one of the LAN ports on the switch or hub, attach an Ethernet cable from
the wireless router into the SW-20
Satellite modem using a straight-through cable. Connect your network computers
into the remaining Ethernet
ports on the switch or hub.
By default, the SW-20 modem will assign dynamic IP addresses to the computers on
the network. If you are
using static IP addresses on your network, check to be sure the gateway address
listed in the network card's
static IP address configuration is the local address for the SW-20 Satellite
modem (192.168.30.1). Please note
that you MUST keep your static IP addresses in the same range as the SW-20
Satellite modem (192.168.30.2
through 192.168.30.254).
. 3) Using a firewall, the SW-20 and the D-Link DI-624 Wireless Router.
Note: This example may not work with other brands of wireless routers.
As with example 1, the SW-10 Satellite modem will handle the dynamic IP address
assignments in the local
network.
In this example, you will be using the D-Link ' WAN port instead of the LAN
port. Doing this enables your
network to have the protection of a network firewall. Before connecting the
SW-20 Satellite modem, you will need
to configure the D-Link router with a static IP address in the “WAN” section of
the router configuration.
Using this configuration, you are assigning the SW-20 Satellite modem and the
D-Link router to their own local
network. This requires the D-Link router to use a different number in the third
octet of it's dynamically
assigned IP address. This doesn't include the IP address configured in the “WAN”
section of the router
configuration. This setup also requires for the DHCP server both the SW-20
Satellite modem and the D-Link
router to be enabled.
Important Note: The SW-20 router has a default IP address of 192.168.30.1. Any
dynamic or static addresses
will require an address of 192.168.30.x. When you assign an address to the “WAN”
section of the D-Link router, it
will require an address of 192.168.30.2 through 192.168.30.254. It is
recommended that you use automatic
DHCP assignment on the WAN configuration of the D-Link router. If this option
isn't available, a static IP address
of 192.168.30.100 is recommended for the WAN configuration.
The DHCP dynamic assignment on the D-Link DI-624 must use a different IP address
range. This requires
changing the 3rd octet in the IP address configuration. Where the SW-20 modem
uses 192.168.30.x, it is
recommended that you use an address such as 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x, which is
generally a standard with
most wireless routers with DHCP ability.
Now you're ready to connect the SW-20 Satellite modem and the D-Link DI-624
wireless router. Using a straight-
through Ethernet cable, plug one end into the WAN and/or INTERNET port on the
wireless router and plug the
other end into the SW-20 modem.
Please note: If you're using static WAN assignment on the wireless router, you
will need to assign the gateway
the IP address of the SW-20 Satellite modem.
By default, the D-Link wireless router will assign dynamic IP addresses to the
computers on the network. If you
are using static IP addresses on your network, check to be sure the gateway
address listed in the network card's
static IP address configuration is the local address for the D-Link wireless
router. Please note that you MUST
keep your static IP addresses in the same range as the D-Link wireless router.
DO NOT USE the SW-20
Satellite modem address range.
*Most other brands of routers work in the same manner as D-Link.
