| FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) |
| Q: | What is high-speed or broadband access? |
| A: | High-speed/broadband access to the internet typically refers to
speeds that meet or exceed 300kbps. As a comparison, typical dial-up
speeds are in the range of 28.8kbps or 56kbps. High-speed/broadband
access, therefore, is a timesaving tool that allows you to work
faster while you are using the Internet. |
| Q: | Why should I consider SkyWay USA Satellite? |
| A: | Not every home has access to DSL or Cable broadband Internet access services and the costs of setting up this technology throughout the country, to each home, are in the billions of dollars. SkyWay USA satellite Internet service allows virtually everyone to have access to lightning-fast Internet access. The download of information from the Internet to your computer goes from the satellite direct to your PC. The upload of information from your computer to the Internet goes first via an existing phone line to SkyWay USA (or your existing ISP) and then is uploaded to the satellite. Regardless of where you live, if you have a clear view of the southern sky, you should be able to get SkyWay USA's broadband satellite Internet services. With Skyway you can surf at broadband speed without going out of your budget. You can install the equipment yourself for only $99.95 (this includes everything you will need). |
| Q: | What is the difference between DSL and satellite high-speed/broadband? |
| A: | DSL operates over your existing telephone line, however it is distance limited. DSL is only available to customers located approximately three-miles from the local telephone switch. With satellite Internet, as long as you have a clear view that allows you to point the satellite dish towards the satellite, you can receive the signal. |
| Q: | Is high-speed satellite Internet access faster than DSL? |
| A: | Not necessarily. Different providers will commit different speeds and service packages, some of which are actually slower than the packages provided by SkyWay USA. Our satellite Internet is used mostly in places where DSL isn’t available, thereby giving people who live in rural areas a true broadband solution. |
| Q: | What is the difference between my dial-up and satellite Internet? |
| A: | A tremendous time savings to you! Your dial up brings back information from websites into your computer at anywhere from 5 to 56K, while the satellite will bring the same information into your computer at 256-1500Kbps. The theoretical maximum speed over your telephone line back into your computer is 42Kbps. This is a time saving of 5 to 26X |
| Q: | Why would I want to upgrade my dial-up Internet service? |
| A: | The faster speed means less waiting time, increasing work efficiency making telecommuting or working from home a practical reality. To decrease the time it takes to download materials from the Internet. To significantly shorten your time spent waiting for downloads and to more effectively manage your time spent on the Internet. It is simple, easy and reliable. |
| Q: | Shouldn’t I just wait for CABLE/DSL to come to the area? |
| A: | You could, but you may be waiting a few years. Since the late 90’s cable systems have been slow to upgrade their systems. Did you know that it costs over $100,000 a mile to run fiber optics? There are miles and miles of cable in your town today. If you do not have access today, it may take at least 3 to 5 years for it to come to this area. |
| Q: | What are the advantages of a SkyWay USA satellite system over a "two-way" satellite system? |
| A: |
SkyWay USA is less expensive and more reliable than current
two-way satellite systems. Severe weather conditions can
affect any satellite based system, but because SkyWay USA
uses a high-power 18 ft. satellite dish located on a 14
story building, our susceptibility to rain-fade is far less
than our two-way competitors.
Because two-way satellite systems transmit back to the satellite at maximum of 2 watts, users frequently experience a complete loss of connectivity in bad weather. Because SkyWay USA uses both the satellite downlink AND a redundant terrestrial telephone uplink through dial-up to connect to the internet, even under the worst conditions our service may temporarily slow down but will never fail. |
| Q: | Why should I choose SkyWay USA while your competitors are offering similar services? |
| A: | SkyWay USA is a faster, more reliable, and a more economical service with
better customer care (that is USA based). It’s faster and more reliable because SkyWay
USA doesn’t experience the same time-out delays caused by a
"two-way" approach of uploading requests to the satellite.
Satellites are really designed to broadcast, not receive information. SkyWay USA takes advantage of satellite’s strengths by using it for downloading of information only. The uploading of information is handled over the telephone line. As you know, when you’re using a dial-up service, you are rarely waiting to upload your page requests or e-mails. All the waiting time is based on downloading the information over your telephone line. The use of satellite to download eliminates the problem. Finally, SkyWay USA's competitors systems require the use of
software that is only available for Microsoft Windows. With the
exclusive SW-11 satellite Internet modem, SkyWay USA can provide
satellite Internet service to anyone with a computer, regardless of
the operating system in use. This means that rural customers who use
Apple computers or PCs running Linux can now surf the Internet at
blazing speeds. |
| Q: | What if the telephone lines in my area are bad? Won’t that affect the SkyWay USA service? |
| A: | If your telephone infrastructure is bad, you’re probably used to slow dial-up connection rates. The good news is, this won’t effect your high-speed surfing experience! 80% of Internet activity involves downloading information (in the form of web pages, photos and music). High-speed surfing only becomes a reality when information from the web can immediately download (or arrive) on your machine. Telephone lines cannot support the immediate delivery of large amounts of information. There’s just too much information to fit through that small pipe, so the information ‘trickles’ through it. It’s all made worse if your telephone infrastructure is bad. However, our satellite Internet service only uses your telephone line to upload small amounts of information (for example web page requests). This small amount of information moves quickly and easily through your telephone line directly to the website you’re visiting. The website then blasts the page to your computer, photos and all, via the satellite. Downloads up to 1500Kbps resulting in true web surfing experience. |
| Q: | Is the satellite dish the same as the one used for TV? |
| A: | No. The satellite dish is slightly larger. It is a separate dish from satellite TV |
| Q: | Can I answer my telephone while I'm using Skyway USA? |
| A: | Yes. You can answer incoming calls to your phone while connected
to the internet using SkyWay USA by purchasing a special "Catch A
Call" hardware device that allows you to briefly suspend your
internet connection. You can order this directly from SkyWay USA on
sale for $39.95 (regular price $49.95) with free shipping when
placing your order.
|
| Q: | Can I share my connection to the Internet with other computers on my home network? |
| A: | Yes. If you install the connection on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can do this by enabling "Internet Connection Sharing". If you do not have a machine that is running Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can purchase a program called “WinProxy” which will allow you to share your connection. Additionally, the SkyWay USA exclusive SW-10 satellite Internet modem can connect to any standard wired or wireless Internet router or network switch, making networking as simple as connecting a cable. | Q: | Does your service work with Mac or Linux based computers? |
| A: | Yes. ANY computer with a network interface card (NIC) and network capable operating system can use the SkyWay USA service. |
| Q: | How can I tell how fast I'm actually connected? |
| A: | You can visit the PCPitstop.com site (click here), click on "Manual Tests", and select "Cable Modem and Satellite Bandwidth Test". |
| Q: | How do I uninstall AOL? |
| A: | If you are currently using the AOL software, and wish to completely uninstall, you MUST contact AOL Technical Support, and request all the hidden drivers be removed. Speak to a supervisor if neccessary. |
| Q: | What are the minimum system requirements? |
| A: | - Any TCP/IP enabled operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Linux,
Unix) - An available ethernet network interface |
| Q: | What if I don't have an Ethernet port? |
| A: | If you don't have an Ethernet port on your computer, you will need to purchase a Ethernet card that is compatible with your operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc) from your local computer dealer. Please note that SkyWay USA does not support the installation of Ethernet cards on customer computers. |
| Q: | Can I really Install The Skyway System Myself? |
| A: | Yes! If you are reasonably handy, or know someone who is,
most installations take about an hour and a half. There is no
software to load and everything you need to self install is
included. The DVD instruction video will walk you through.
Technical support is readily available for any questions. If you don't want to install the system yourself, there are 1000's of satellite TV dealers/installers that would get you up an running for a nominal fee. |
| Q: | Can I upgrade my Service Plan? |
| A: | Yes, Many customers that are used to slow dial up speeds find that they can do so much more surfing at high speed. Skyway provides you with the ability to enjoy high speed surfing so many customers use their computer even more. Upgrading a plan is just a simple call to technical support. |
